"Science is a way of investigating, understanding and explaining our natural world, physical world and wider universe" (NZ Curriculum).

Students need to lean what science is and how scientists work as well as scientific knowledge.

Science programmes at Eastern Hutt aim to provide hands on investigations that will develop students' curiosity of the world around us and an interest in science.

Opaque is a strange word!

You might be wondering what opaque means too. (You say it like O-PAKE)

The clever students in the Juniors found out this week.

They have been learning about shadows and discovered that if light cannot shine through an object the light is blocked and a shadow is made.

Objects that don't let light shine through are called opaque.

They made shadows with their hands by blocking the light coming from a torch with their hand.

Hands are opaque.

Next they tested some other objects to see if they were opaque too. This is what we found out:

Tom - I am really interested in science because I like finding stuff out.

Levi - I have learned that light always comes from the sun.

Kaysha - Light can come from lightbulbs.

Jordan - We used Tom's book to reflect the light from the torch.

  2. Bronte - We had to test things to see if they were opaque or not. I could tell it was opaque because I could not see the torch light coming through on my hand.

Dylan - I found out that a torch can't go through a book.
